How to Keep Your Family Photo Session Stress‑Free (and Magical!) Even if it rains.

You spent weeks coordinating outfits. You marked the calendar with hearts. You finally convinced your husband that yes, the kids will survive 45 minutes if there’s a snack waiting in the car. And then…the forecast turns ominous. Cue the raincloud emoji and that sinking feeling in your stomach.

As a Marietta photographer who’s seen her share of surprise showers, I completely understand the panic that can sneak in when the skies decide not to cooperate on photo day. But take a breath with me, friend: a family photo session in the rain doesn’t have to mean disaster. In fact, some of my favorite images were taken in light rain or right after a storm passed.

Let’s talk about your options so you can walk into your session with confidence, no matter what the weather decides to do.

Rain Doesn’t Mean Ruined Photos (Promise)

Here’s the truth: the weather in Marietta and the surrounding Atlanta area has a mind of its own. We can check three forecasts, each saying something different. But what matters most is how we respond. Whether we duck inside, grab umbrellas, or twirl through puddles, rain just gives us a different kind of magic to work with.

Believe it or not, some of the most memorable sessions I’ve ever photographed happened when we leaned into the moment instead of running from it.

Let’s walk through a few stress‑saving, joy‑creating strategies for an unexpected family photo session in the rain.

1. Reschedule If You Can

When possible, we can absolutely shift your date. Most of my Marietta photo sessions are booked with flexible backup options in mind because I get it, you want golden light and dry ground, not wet clothing and frizzy hair. If rescheduling is an option, I’ll gladly help find another time on my calendar that fits your family’s schedule. We’ll prioritize light, location, and most importantly, your peace of mind.

But what if rescheduling isn’t an option? Or the drizzle sneaks in right as we’re on location?

That’s where plan B — and C — come in.

2. Move Inside or Find Shelter

If we’re caught in an unexpected shower, the session doesn’t necessarily have to be canceled. We can move to:

  • A covered porch or breezeway (I have go‑to spots around Marietta that are beautiful and weather‑safe)
  • A cozy, light‑filled indoor location (some families even choose their own home for a more personal, documentary vibe)
  • A public space with an overhead shelter, like a gazebo or pavilion, that keeps your family dry without losing the light

This is where the planning comes into play on my end. I scout and suggest rain‑friendly locations so you don’t have to scramble. You’ll still get timeless images…and dry socks!

3. Clear Umbrellas Are Not Just for Looks

If the weather looks iffy, I always throw a couple of clear umbrellas in my car…just in case.

They’re not only practical to keep you from getting drenched, but they also photograph like a dream. You can still see faces, and they add a romantic, storybook feel to your images. Kids love peeking out from underneath, and mom and dad? You two kissing under an umbrella could easily end up being the one that makes the wall.

Bonus points for towels or a change of clothes for little ones post‑session. Rain is fun until it’s chilly on the drive home! If the forecast looks like rain on the day of your photo session, I'll remember the umbrellas, and you can grab the towels and warm change of clothes.

4. Shift the Mindset: Memories Over Perfection

Rain may shift your expectations, but it doesn’t have to dampen your story.

One of the most beautiful things about a family photo session in the rain is its chance to reflect life as it is, unpredictable, fun, and real. Years from now, your littles won’t remember the weather. They’ll remember jumping in puddles or dancing barefoot beside you.

When you embrace the moment, natural photos beautifully follow.

5. Embrace the Rain with Playful Photos

Sometimes rainy‑day play makes for photos you’ll treasure forever. If you and your kids are up for it, we can:

  • Dance in the rain
  • Snuggle under one big umbrella
  • Catch raindrops on your tongue
  • Jump in puddles (matching boots welcome!)
  • Recreate the scene from The Notebook or the kiss from Spiderman

A light sprinkle with overcast skies? It's no worries to me! As long as it’s not pouring, I have a weather‑sealed camera and the experience to keep photographing with confidence. Plus, there's plenty of soft light, and your little ones might have so much fun they ask to keep going, even when the session is technically over.

And just between us, if there’s even a sliver of sunshine peeking through, we might still get a beautiful sunset after the storm passes. Yes, it’s happened before. And yes, it was magical. We may even be blessed with a rainbow!
