What is a Fine Art Children's Portrait?

Fine art children’s photography is more than a photograph. It is a timeless work of art inspired by classic paintings and refined through a modern lens. This style uses rich tones, soft light, and intentional composition to create portraits that feel elevated and timeless. Every element, from wardrobe to setting, is chosen with care, resulting in an image that feels like a work of art. These portraits are designed as heirloom pieces of art that highlight your child’s natural beauty and authentic expression.

As a Marietta photographer specializing in fine art children’s portraiture, my work is centered on creating custom artwork of your child that stands apart from traditional photography. Each fine art portrait tells a story, blending classic elegance with modern storytelling to create an heirloom that will be cherished for generations.

How does a fine art children's photo session work?

Planning your Session

After booking, you’ll receive a detailed prep guide and a short planning questionnaire. We’ll also schedule a relaxed consultation in your home to design a fine art session for your little one that feels thoughtful, personalized, and beautifully cohesive.

We’ll discuss the images you’re most hoping for, whether to choose outdoors or in studio, color palettes, and how you may want to display your finished images, so the session is created with the final result in mind from the very beginning.

Outfit Styling

Wardrobe plays a significant role in the final aesthetic of a fine art portrait. Styling is planned collaboratively, whether that involves pieces from your child’s existing wardrobe, sourcing something new, or selecting from the curated Client Closet. The result is a portrait that reads like art.

Photographing Your

Fine Art Session

Fine art sessions are intentionally designed as child-only portrait experiences. This focused approach allows the session to move at your child’s pace while keeping the attention exactly where it belongs, on their expression, personality, and growth in this season. With gentle age-appropriate direction throughout the session, your little one will have space for natural interaction and genuine moments to unfold.

Because fine art sessions are designed specifically for children, they are intentionally brief and efficient, respecting attention spans while still allowing space for flexibility when needed. The result is a curated collection of fine art portraits that feel timeless, expressive, and worthy of being printed and displayed.

Selecting Your Artwork

After the session, we’ll meet for a personalized ordering appointment where you’ll view your images and select the artwork and photographs that best fit your home and family.

Rather than navigating dozens of decisions alone, you’ll receive guidance in choosing favorite images, wall art, framed pieces, and keepsakes designed to be enjoyed for years to come.

Completed artwork is carefully produced and delivered within 6–8 weeks, allowing time for professional finishing and quality control.

What does it cost?

Fine art photo sessions are reserved with a $300 session fee, which secures your date and includes the planning and design process leading up to your session.

Artwork and images are purchased separately during your personalized ordering appointment after the session.

Most clients choose to invest around $2400+ in custom artwork and photographs for their home.

How is a Fine Art Children's Session different from a regular session?

A fine art children’s portrait session is a more carefully curated and artistically driven experience than a traditional portrait session. While many children’s or family sessions focus on capturing a wide variety of candid moments and expressions, fine art portraits are created with the intention of becoming finished artwork from the very beginning.

These sessions are slower, more intentional, and designed around a refined artistic vision. Every detail, from wardrobe and styling to lighting, posing, and composition, is thoughtfully considered to create portraits that feel timeless, painterly, and deeply expressive. Rather than documenting a moment as it happened, fine art portraiture is about creating a finished piece that feels more like a painting than a traditional photograph.

Editing is where each fine art portrait truly comes to life, transforming the image into a unique piece of artwork. Light and shadow are carefully shaped for depth, details are enhanced for richness, skin is refined while preserving natural texture, and backgrounds are subtly perfected to create a classic, museum-worthy finish. Each image is thoughtfully hand-crafted to highlight your child’s individuality, beauty, and innocence.

Many families choose to commission several pieces from a single session, creating a cohesive collection of artwork designed to be displayed and enjoyed throughout their home for years to come.

Intentional Styling For Timeless Art

Wardrobe plays a meaningful role in the final aesthetic of a fine art portrait, which is why styling is approached intentionally, with the finished artwork in mind. Together, we will plan the outfits to complement your child's natural beauty in the timeless fine art style.

The Client Closet includes dresses and outfits chosen specifically for fine art portraiture. You’re welcome to style your child from the Client Closet, incorporate pieces from your child’s existing wardrobe, or combine the two. If you're interested in purchasing something special for your child's fine art session, I can recommend select children’s boutique brands that align beautifully with this style of artwork.

At this time, the Client Closet includes options for girls only. For boys, styling is thoughtfully guided using pieces from your child’s own wardrobe, with recommendations provided as needed to ensure the final look complements the artwork being created.

Marietta Fine Art Children's Photography FAQs

Do I need separate sessions for each of my children?

Not necessarily. Multiple children can be photographed during the same fine art session, with each child receiving individual attention and portraits. Sibling images can also be incorporated if desired.

What ages are best for a children's fine art session?

Fine art children’s sessions work best once a child can sit independently and engage with gentle direction. For that reason, I recommend waiting until your child is at least six months old and able to sit unassisted. From that stage on, fine art portraiture can be beautifully adapted to a wide range of ages, with the approach tailored to your child’s personality, attention span, and comfort level.

When is the best time to schedule a fine art session?

Fine art children’s portraits can be created at any time of year. If you have a particular mood or aesthetic in mind, I’m happy to recommend seasons or settings that best support that vision. Because children change quickly, scheduling early helps ensure availability and allows you to capture this stage intentionally, rather than waiting until it has passed.

What does a fine art session cost?

Each session is reserved with a session fee of $300. You will select your final images and pay for your artwork at an ordering session in the convenience of your home 1-2 weeks after your session. A full price list will be provided when you inquire.

Can we bring our dog?

Yes. Well-behaved pets can absolutely be included in a fine art children’s session. If you’d like to incorporate a beloved pet in your session, just let me know during planning.

What if it rains?

I closely monitor the forecast leading up to your session. If weather conditions aren’t ideal, we’ll reschedule and select a new date together. Weather-related reschedules are never an issue, and the goal is always to create the best possible conditions for your child’s artwork.

What if my child is shy, energetic, or slow to warm up?

That’s completely normal. Fine art children’s sessions are guided gently and paced with your child in mind. I work with children every day and approach each session with patience, flexibility, and an understanding of how kids naturally move, explore, and engage.

That said, these sessions are best suited for children who are able to follow simple direction for short periods of time. If you have concerns about your child’s temperament or attention span, I encourage you to share them during planning so we can decide together whether this type of session is the right fit right now, or if another approach would better serve your child.

What are some good locations for a fine art children's portrait?

Location plays an important role in the overall feel of a fine art portrait. I’ve scouted a variety of beautiful indoor and outdoor locations that work especially well for this style, and I’m always refining and expanding that list.

That said, some of the most meaningful and visually striking settings are personal ones. Your home, a landscaped yard, a family property, or a private space you have access to, such as a country club or estate, can provide a rich, authentic backdrop that elevates the final artwork. During planning, we’ll talk through all available options and select a location that best supports the vision for your child’s portraits.

How many images will I have to choose from?

Each fine art session is designed to create a curated variety of strong portraits rather than a high volume of similar images. The exact number will vary depending on factors like styling changes and the flow of the session, but you can expect a thoughtfully edited selection that gives you meaningful options for commissioning finished artwork.

Can we include family photos as part of the children's fine art session?

Fine art children’s sessions are designed with your child as the primary focus, allowing the time and attention needed to create the fine art portraits. For smaller families, it may be possible to include a limited number of family images during the same session, depending on the overall vision and scope.

For larger families, I recommend scheduling a separate session on a different date. This allows each session to be approached intentionally and ensures neither feels rushed or compromised. Images from both sessions can then be selected together during your ordering appointment. If this is something you're interested in, please let me know when you inquire, and we can discuss all options.

Do you photograph in a studio or only outdoors?

Both studio and outdoor fine art portraits are available. Studio sessions offer a more controlled environment, ideal for shaping light and creating a clean, timeless look. Outdoor sessions allow for a softer, more organic feel, using carefully chosen locations to complement the artwork.

If you’re interested in both studio and outdoor fine art portraits, this can be accomplished by scheduling two separate session dates. Images from both sessions can then be selected together during your ordering appointment, allowing you to commission a cohesive collection of finished artwork.

What if I only want digitals and no artwork?

Fine art children’s sessions are designed around the creation of finished artwork. A matching digital image is included with select pieces of commissioned artwork, allowing you to enjoy and share your portraits while ensuring the final work is preserved as intended. Digital images are also available to purchase separately.
