Let’s be honest. Being told to “just relax and look natural” during a photo session is like being told to “act normal” when you walk into a surprise party. You start overthinking every move, forget what to do with your hands, and suddenly it feels anything but natural.
As a Marietta photographer who specializes in working with busy, intentional moms, I’ve heard it all: “I just feel awkward,” and “I’m not photogenic.” One sweet mom even told me she used to dread family photos because her stress would rub off on her daughter, and their images would end up looking stiff, no matter how hard they tried.
If you’ve ever wondered how to look natural on camera, especially during family photos, you're not alone. But the good news? It’s absolutely possible, even if you’ve felt awkward in the past.
Here’s the twist: that same mom now comes back every year because photoshoots are their new favorite tradition. They laugh. They play. They leave feeling beautiful. So, what changed?
She found a photographer who made the process feel easy and simple,
not pressure-packed and awkward.
Spoiler alert: That photographer was me. And today I’m sharing exactly how I help families look and feel natural in front of the camera so your next session can feel just as effortless.
The Real Reason It’s Hard to “Just Relax” for Family Photos
If you've ever felt awkward during a photo session, it’s not because there's something wrong with you; it’s probably just because no one gave you the tools or direction to feel confident and at ease.
Most people aren't models, and without support, standing in front of a lens can feel deeply vulnerable. Some of the sweetest clients I’ve worked with came to me right after a frustrating photography experience. One even told me their last photographer just kept saying, “Now do something different.”
They were left scrambling with no direction, no guidance, and definitely no fun. That’s the kind of stress that shows in your gallery. And the worst part? It doesn’t have to be like that.
Truth is, my job as your photographer isn’t just to take pictures. It’s to lead the session with confidence, create a relaxed environment, and pull out real connection using playful, thoughtful prompts that make the whole thing feel like a fun hangout rather than a staged production.
So if you’ve ever found yourself wishing you knew how to look natural on camera, this one’s for you.
5 Ways to Look Natural on Camera (Without Feeling Awkward)
1. Let Go of the Pressure to “Perform”
You are not responsible for making the session perfect; that’s why you've got me. Long before we meet for your session, I’ve already walked you through planning, sent over your style guide, and customized everything based on your personality and family dynamic. All you need to do is show up and be with your people.
2. Skip the “Say Cheese” Trap
Say it with me: no more cheesy smiles. Ever wondered why “say cheese” became a thing? It’s because the mouth shape somewhat mimics a smile. But it’s not real, and it definitely doesn’t feel authentic.
Instead, I guide families into laughter and connection with silly prompts like “Say Daddy has stinky feet!” or “Say ice cream!” - both of which get you smiling for real, not just making a shape. (Though you'll notice they both end in the same mouth shape as "cheese".) And more often than not, I don’t even ask anyone to say a word or phrase. We play, interact, and create moments where the chemistry speaks louder than a pose.
3. Start With Movement, Not Mug Shots
If there’s any nervous energy (and hey, that’s completely normal), I never jump straight into “everyone stand still and smile.” We’ll start with interaction: think snuggles, leaning on each other, walking slowly, spinning the toddler, or playing peekaboo behind dad’s shoulder. Movement helps the whole family drop into the moment and forget the camera is even there.
The goal isn’t the perfect pose. It’s creating an experience that feels like you: affectionate, warm, connected. That’s where the real magic lies.
4. Trust the Process (Even If You Feel Awkward at First)
As someone who fully claims the title of “Queen of Awkward,” I get it. If you’re nervous or unsure, I’ll absolutely meet you there. I ask get-to-know-you questions and figure out what topics light you up, because the spark in your eyes when you talk about something you love? That’s the real you that deserves to be captured.
And if you’re still not 100% convinced, I’ll show you a few shots on the back of my camera mid-session. Seeing how radiant you already look can bring that last little boost of confidence and get you fully out of your head.
Bonus Tip:
This tactic works especially well with children. Try it next time you're trying to snap a photo of your little one. Ask about their favorite TV show or movie, or something that they love, and wait for that big smile you love so much to show up.
5. Remember, This Is About Memories, Not Perfection
The best family photos don’t just capture what you look like; they capture what it feels like to love and be loved in this season. That little head on your shoulder, the giggles after an inside joke, the way your spouse watches you with pride, those are the moments you’ll want to remember forever.
You don’t have to pose your way into looking natural. Just show up and be present. I’ll take care of the rest.
This Is The Formula That Truly Makes Your Photos Shine
Looking natural in photos doesn’t happen by accident; it happens when you feel deeply cared for, fully guided, and free to be present with the people you love most. That’s why every part of the Christian Michelle Photography experience is built to help intentional moms feel seen, supported, and absolutely radiant on camera.
Sessions are fun. They’re heartfelt. And yes, they’re calm and easy because everything has been planned with care (and maybe a little bit of strategy I keep tucked away in my camera bag).
So if you’ve been waiting to feel confident and joyful in front of the camera and have the kind of experience that actually leaves you smiling while the shutter clicks, I’d be honored to help you make that memory.
FAQ
How can I stop feeling awkward in front of the camera?
Most people feel awkward at first, so you're definitely not alone. I'm also one of those people! The key is finding a photographer you connect with and who guides you with prompts, not stiff poses.
What should I do with my hands in photos?
A good photographer will direct you so you always know what to do. But a general rule of thumb is to touch someone else in the frame. Such as holding someone's hand or creating a connection by touching their shoulder or elbow. See how many connection points you can make between the subjects in the photo.
Can I look good in photos even if I’m not photogenic?
Absolutely. Photogenic isn't a look, it's a feeling. When you're relaxed and being yourself, the camera captures that glow. Your photographer's confidence and guidance should put you at ease, so that your natural beauty shines through in each frame.
How do I help my kids look natural in photos?
Start with play and connection, not stiff posing. Prompts and games are some of my magic tricks.
