When you think of maternity photos, chances are your belly is front and center—literally! And there is no reason why you shouldn’t bare the bump as part of your maternity photo session. Whether you’re feeling bold and radiant or a little unsure, bare belly maternity photos can be a powerful way to celebrate the incredible work your body is doing. There’s no denying that there is something extra meaningful about showing off your bare skin baby bump in a beautiful moment you’ll never repeat in quite the same way.

Here’s how to make bare belly maternity photos feel natural, comfortable, and uniquely you.

1. Choose the Right Outfit (or Lack of One!)

The best outfits for bare belly photos give you flexibility both literally and figuratively. Here are a few ideas that look beautiful on camera:

  • Open-front gowns that drape around your bump while adding softness and movement, and allow for coverage of any skin you won’t want to show off.
  • Crop tops or fitted bandeaus or bralettes paired with a flowy boho skirt. Or consider unbuttoned jeans for a carefree, casual look.
  • Oversized button-down shirts for a relaxed, cozy feel. Button as many (or few) buttons as you’re comfortable with and let the belly breathe! Consider using one of your husband’s shirts for a personal touch.
  • Lace, tulle, or silk robes that offer texture without fully covering your belly.
  • A bathing suit is a great option if your location includes water and can be paired with a cute coverup for additional movement, texture, and variety.
  • Nothing at all, for those who are feeling extra bold! Just skin, hands, and connection if you want something minimalist and timeless.

Not sure what sounds best? Wearing layers can also be a quick way to combine options and easily switch up your look. Or choose a few looks and plan for an outfit change. I love helping my maternity clients prep for their sessions by choosing the right outfits to pair with the location.

2. Pick a Setting That Feels Personal

Bare belly photos can work beautifully in a variety of locations. Your maternity photographer can help you choose a location that fits the vibe you’re going for.

  • At-home sessions bring a cozy, intimate vibe (think natural light in the bedroom or nursery). Plus, your home is a deeply personal location full of memories.
  • Outdoor shoots during golden hour add a touch of magic with your bare skin glowing in soft evening light. Concerned about privacy? I’ve got a number of private locations to suggest where we are sure to have the place to ourselves.
  • Studio-style setups are perfect if you’re looking for a clean, fine-art look or want to play with dramatic lighting. Keep it simple with solid backdrops or choose a lifestyle studio for a decorated look. Another bonus for renting a studio for your maternity session is that you’ll have all the privacy you need!
  • Want a homey feel but don’t want to use your home? Consider booking a Vrbo for a curated look that fits your vibe. Choose a local option for a little staycation or make your maternity session part of your babymoon and visit somewhere unique for your ideal maternity photo session!

3. Make Bare Belly Photos Work in Any Season

When it comes to maternity photos, sometimes you just have to work with whatever season you’re in! But good news, because I’ve got tips for getting the perfect bare bump photo in every season.

For My Summer Mamas:

Staying cool while pregnant is already no small feat! But maternity sessions in the summer heat don’t have to be uncomfortable. Bare belly maternity photos are a fun and practical way to beat the heat while still looking effortlessly beautiful. Light fabrics, minimal layers, and a touch of sunshine on your bare skin? Yes, please! Add in some water at your location, and you’ve got the perfect combination for photos that feel more like a summer daydream than a sweaty chore.

For Cooler Seasons:

Bare belly doesn’t have to mean freezing! Here’s how to keep the cozy vibes going in Fall and Winter:

  • Choose indoor locations with soft natural light (like your home or a studio or get a cute Airbnb for a stylish location and stay-cation in one!)
  • Wrap up between shots with a blanket or robe, or hop in the car to thaw out.
  • Wear textured layers—think chunky knits, soft wraps, or faux fur to frame the belly while staying warm.
  • If doing an outdoor session, consider a location where you can have a cozy fire or sip some warm drinks with your partner.
  • A hot tub can be a warm and steamy way to show some skin in chilly weather.

The key is creating a relaxed environment where you feel beautiful and cared for—no matter the season.

4. Add Personal Touches

Make your photos feel even more meaningful by incorporating:

  • Your partner’s hands or kisses on your bare belly
  • Body paint you and/or your husband can use to decorate your skin or write notes to the baby.
  • Decorate your bare belly with pressed flowers or gold leaf.
  • Bring along baby clothing, or shoes, or your latest ultrasound photo.

These small details tell your story and make your bare belly photos even more personal.

5. Focus On Connection—Not Perfection

Stretch marks? Linea nigra? A little bump of baby foot under the skin? That’s the good stuff! Bare belly maternity photos are meant to honor the real and radiance of motherhood, not to edit it out. Your skin tells the story of your love for the little one growing inside.

So don’t stress over perfect posing or angles (that’s my job anyway), instead focus on the connection with your baby and with your partner. Take a deep breath, close your eyes, and think about your baby and feel them move. That connection and love are what make these photos powerful.

If you’ve been on the fence about showing your bump, let this be your nudge: You won’t regret having these photos; you’ll only regret not taking them while you had the chance.

Bare belly maternity photos are a powerful reminder of everything your body has done, everything you’re becoming, and everything that’s just around the corner. You’re already doing something incredible. Let’s capture it.
