As a Chattanooga family photographer, I’ve learned a thing or two about what makes a session truly magical. And in my opinion, it’s not about forcing perfect poses or making sure every hair is in place. The best family photos happen when you’re having fun, feeling comfortable, and simply enjoying each other’s company. So, here are my best tips to help you get the most out of your family photo session!

1. Pick the Right Photographer for Your Style

Every photographer has a unique approach, so it’s important to choose one whose style matches your vision. Look through portfolios, read reviews, and find a photographer whose work makes you feel something. Choosing the right photographer ensures you’ll love not only the final images but the experience as well.

If you want a session full of laughter, natural interactions, and candid images that reflect real family moments, a lifestyle family photographer (like me!) is your perfect match! If you prefer classic, perfectly posed portraits where everything is perfectly in its place for every photo, that’s great too! But it might mean that I’m not the right photographer for you. I want you to have the photos you want the most even if it means recommending someone else who fits your style best.

It is so important to choose a photographer whose style aligns with your vision so that you can trust your photographer to provide you with the images that are perfect for you! Finding the right fit ensures you’ll receive amazing family photos that truly reflect your family’s personality.

2. Trust Your Photographer

Once you’ve found the right family photographer for your family, trust her to do what she does best! When you trust your photographer, you can relax and enjoy the session without worrying about the details.

From choosing the best time of day for dreamy lighting to guiding you into flattering and natural poses, I’ve got you covered! You don’t need to stress about locations, angles, or even what to do with your hands because that’s my job! I know the best local spots for beautiful backdrops, how to adjust for the changing light, and how to get natural, heartfelt expressions from your family. You can trust my expertise so you can focus on what really matters: making memories with your family.

3. Preparation is Key

A little planning goes a long way in making your photo session smooth, stress-free, and enjoyable. When you take the time to prepare beforehand, you’re free to focus on the moment and the memories you’re making.

Here are a few ways you can prepare your family ahead of time to ensure an amazing family photo session:

Get Everyone Fed and Rested

Happy tummies = happy faces! If your session is close to mealtime, consider giving everyone a light snack beforehand to keep energy levels up and crankiness at bay. Well-rested, well-fed families are more relaxed and ready to have fun!

Tired and hungry kids (and adults!) can make a session feel stressful. A well-timed nap, a snack before the session, and plenty of water can work wonders in keeping everyone happy and cooperative. If your little one needs a break during the shoot, that’s okay! We’ll work at their pace and capture beautiful moments along the way.

Choose Outfits Thoughtfully

What you wear can make or break the look of your photos. Carefully curate your family’s outfits, including socks, shoes, and yes, even underwear! Think complimentary colors and tones, and don’t be afraid to embrace texture in fabrics. Avoid logos or unnaturally bright colors and patterns that may distract from the emotion and connection in the images. And don’t forget to iron! It makes a big difference in how polished your final images look. Coordinating (but not matching) outfits photograph beautifully and choosing the right wardrobe ensures your amazing family photos have a cohesive and timeless feel.

Choosing a photographer who offers a Client Closet (like me!) is a great way to dress your family without the stress of doing it all yourself!

BONUS TIP:

Opt for a Lip Stain Instead of Lipstick

Lipstick is beautiful but can smudge and transfer, especially when giving hugs and kisses during a session. Instead, opt for a lip stain or tinted balm that enhances your natural color without the risk of smearing. This way, you can fully enjoy cuddling your little ones without a second thought and focus on the fun instead of touching up your makeup.

If you’re a lipstick lover and a stain or tint just won’t do, consider a long-wear formula that won’t transfer. The last thing you want is to hold back on affection because you’re worried about leaving a mark. Let those kisses and snuggles happen freely!

4. Relax and Enjoy the Moment

A little preparation beforehand is great, but once we start, let go of expectations and simply have fun. The best family photos happen when you’re fully present—laughing, playing, and loving on your family. No need to micromanage every detail—just be in the moment and let me take care of the rest!

Think of your session as a chance to connect with your loved ones. Instead of worrying about whether your little one is looking at the camera, focus on their giggles, cuddles, and embrace their silliness! Let me keep an eye on the little details and making sure we get the “perfect shot”. When you’re relaxed, it really shows in your photos, making them even more meaningful and beautiful.

Here are a few ways to “relax” during your family photo session:

 Let Kids Be Kids

Your toddler wants to twirl? Your little one won’t stop giggling? Perfect. The best photos come from real moments, not forced smiles. Don’t stress if things don’t go exactly as planned—sometimes, the unexpected moments are the ones you’ll cherish most!

If your child wants to explore, I’ll follow their lead. If they’re feeling shy, I’ll ease them into the session. The best approach is to let kids be themselves—because that’s where the real magic happens.

Think of Your Session

as an Experience

Instead of treating your session like a formal event, think of it as a fun family outing. Play with your kids, share an inside joke, cuddle with your spouse—those authentic moments make the best memories (and the best photos)!

The best sessions feel like playtime rather than a structured photoshoot. Run through a field with your kids, twirl them in your arms, or whisper something silly to get a genuine laugh. The goal is to capture the real, unscripted moments that define your family’s love.

Embrace Movement

and each other!

Some of the most joyful images come from movement like walking hand-in-hand, spinning your little one, and sharing a spontaneous hug. Instead of hyper-focusing on your posture or whether you feel or look “awkward”, don’t be afraid to move naturally during your session. The more fun you have, the better your photos will be – I promise!

Movement helps everyone feel more comfortable and is what I use to create dynamic, storytelling images. I might ask you to take a few steps, sway side to side, or do something playful. It’s all about creating a sense of flow and fun! And don’t forget to touch each other! The images that connect with us the most tend to be the ones where everyone is connected in some way! This can be a simple hand on an arm or a full-on embrace. The more connection points the better!

5. Be Yourself and let go of insecurities

It’s easy to feel self-conscious in front of the camera, but remember: your family loves you just as you are! There is no need to hold back your biggest smile because you’re worried about a perceived double chin or stiffen up because you think a certain angle is more flattering than another. You don’t have to worry, I won’t choose a photo of you that isn’t flattering. You can trust me! My job is to capture your best angles while making sure your natural beauty shines through.

The most authentic moments make the best images! It’s okay to let go of any insecurities and trust that I will highlight the love and beauty in your family. Don’t pretend to be someone you’re not, even if it looks good on Pinterest. Your family is inspiration enough and I bet there is someone out there pinning your family photos to their family photo session board!

The real secret to amazing family photos:

At the end of the day, the best family photos come from genuine moments. The real secret to amazing family photos isn’t about perfection—it’s about connection! Play with your kids, laugh with your spouse, and let go of perfection. Your love and connection are what make your photos amazing. The more fun you have, the more natural and beautiful your images will be!

By following these simple yet powerful tips, you’ll set yourself up for an incredible photo session and receive stunning, amazing family photos that you’ll cherish for years to come. So take a deep breath, have fun, and let’s create something beautiful together!
