While stores start putting out pumpkins before school starts, the trees around Atlanta have never been in such a hurry. Most of the area’s noticeable color arrives in late October and continues into November, with the exact timing changing from year to year.
I grew up in the Atlanta area, and now, as an Atlanta family photographer, I pay especially close attention to what the landscape looks like throughout the season. The timing of the leaves can make a big difference when families are hoping for photographs filled with warm autumn color, or are simply trying to plan a fall outing that looks and feels like fall.
Unfortunately, the trees do not consult our calendars before changing. Temperature, rainfall, elevation, and even the types of trees growing in a particular location can all affect when the leaves turn. That means one part of North Georgia may already be glowing while Marietta and the rest of metro Atlanta are still looking decidedly green.
So, when can you realistically expect the leaves to change in Atlanta? Let’s look at when fall color usually begins, when it tends to peak, and what that timing means if you’re planning family photos this fall.
When Do Leaves Start to Change in Atlanta?
Leaves around Atlanta typically begin changing in late October, although you may notice a few early overachievers before then. (Can anyone relate?) The color usually develops gradually rather than appearing all at once, with different types of trees changing on their own schedules.
Farther north and at higher elevations, fall color arrives earlier. Parts of the North Georgia mountains may begin showing noticeable color in early to mid-October, while the trees closer to Atlanta are still mostly green. The change then works its way toward lower elevations, with Marietta and the rest of metro Atlanta generally following later in the month.
This difference can actually be helpful when planning fall family photos. Families who want an earlier session, and don’t mind a little drive or adventure, may be able to find fall color sooner at one of the higher-elevation or North Georgia locations I photograph. Those who would rather stay closer to Atlanta will usually need to wait a little longer for the landscape to catch up.
When Is Peak Fall Color in Atlanta?
Peak fall color around Atlanta typically arrives in early to mid-November. Which, if you're asking me, feels really late! And as much as I wish it did, there is no single date when every tree suddenly agrees to look its best. Weather conditions throughout the year can cause the timing and intensity of the color to shift, sometimes by a week or more.
Cooler nights help produce vivid fall color, while heat, drought, heavy rain, and strong winds can all affect what the season ultimately looks like. Even during peak color, one location may be filled with red and gold while another nearby is still mostly green. Trees, apparently, have no interest in coordinating for us.
If colorful leaves are a priority for your family photos, waiting until November may give us the best chance of finding them closer to Marietta and Atlanta. The tradeoff is that a later session leaves less time for choosing your images, ordering Christmas cards, and creating photo gifts before the holidays. Peak color is beautiful, but it may not be worth turning your Christmas card deadline into a competitive sport.
For families who need their photos completed earlier, traveling a little farther north can give us more options. Because fall color reaches North Georgia and higher elevations first, we may be able to create that autumn look earlier in October without waiting for the leaves around Atlanta to catch up. Either way, it’s best to get your preferred date on the calendar as early as possible.

Rather than choosing one supposedly perfect weekend, it’s usually better to consider the overall look you want, how far you’re willing to travel, and when you need your finished images. From there, we can choose a date and location that give us the best possible combination.

If you want colorful leaves close to Atlanta, you may need to wait until November. Families hoping to use their images for Christmas cards or photo gifts may prefer an earlier session, especially when allowing time to choose images and order everything. For everyone else, good thing expedited shipping exists! (I’m preaching to the choir here, if I’m being honest.) Fall calendars also tend to fill quickly, both for photographers and families who already have football games, festivals, school events, and every other seasonal activity imaginable.
Your children’s ages and personalities matter, too. Some families thrive in cooler weather, while others would be much happier in spring flowers or a warm summer evening. The colors you enjoy wearing and displaying in your home can also help determine which season will create photographs you’ll love living with year-round. Choose a date during the window when fall color is most likely, then remain flexible about the exact location. Because the leaves change a little differently each year, we may not know which location will look best until closer to your session.
Being open to a location change allows us to follow the color rather than hoping one particular park cooperates on one particular day. If you are also willing to travel farther north, we may have even more options for finding beautiful foliage earlier in the season.
Can My Photographer Guarantee Colorful Leaves?
Unfortunately, no photographer can guarantee colorful leaves at your family photo session. We can use typical peak dates, monitor current conditions, and select locations strategically, but temperature, rain, wind, and the trees themselves will always have the final say. While I offer a fully guided portrait experience, I have not yet mastered weather control.
The good news is that we don’t need every tree to reach peak color at once. A mix of green and autumn color, warm light, tall grasses, and even fallen leaves can all create beautiful fall photographs.
When Should I Book Fall Family Photos in Atlanta?
As early as possible, especially if you hope to work with a particular photographer, need a weekend session date, or want a date during the relatively short peak-color window. Fall is already one of the busiest seasons for family photographers, and the most desirable dates can fill well before the first leaf changes.
Don’t wait until you see colorful leaves to start looking for a photographer. That is often when everyone else gets inspired, too, and you may discover that the photographer you wanted has already booked the remainder of the season.
