If you're wondering about the best time for family photos in Atlanta, the answer depends on more than just your family's schedule. It might seem like a simple question, but it's one of the biggest decisions you'll make when planning your family photo session.
Every year, I have families ask whether golden hour is really worth pushing dinner a little later, rearranging nap schedules, or keeping the kids up past their usual bedtime. After all, if everyone's happier at two in the afternoon, wouldn't that make for better photos?
It's a fair question, and as a mom, I completely understand. But the answer isn't necessarily the same for every family. If you're really asking, "what time of day creates the most beautiful outdoor family portraits?" I almost always recommend golden hour. Not because photographers have some strange obsession with sunsets. I recommend it because the right light can completely transform your photos.
In fact, I'd argue that beautiful light matters even more than a beautiful location. A stunning field photographed in harsh midday sun rarely looks as magical as a simple field photographed in soft evening light. There is just something about that golden hour light that can transform ordinary into magical.
Why I Almost Always Recommend Golden Hour
Just recently, I had a family who requested an earlier session time because of their young children. I explained the difference between golden hour light and light earlier in the day, and let them know their final images would have a different look if done earlier. Together, we chose a location with more shade that works beautifully in the early afternoon. Most importantly, it was a solution that fit their schedule perfectly.
But about a week before their session, they reached out after spending some time looking through my portfolio. They realized many of their favorite images had one thing in common: they were all photographed during golden hour.
So they asked if we could move the session later.
It meant dinner looked a little different that evening, and bedtime was pushed back for one night. But they decided the tradeoff was worth it.
And it absolutely was.
The kids did wonderfully, the evening light was gorgeous, and they walked away with exactly the kind of warm, glowing images they had fallen in love with in the first place.
Now, does that mean every family should push bedtime just to chase the sunset? Not necessarily.
But it does illustrate something I wish more people knew before planning their family photos: beautiful images aren't just about finding a pretty location. They're about bringing together the right location, the right light, and the right plan for your family.
That's why I almost always recommend golden hour when it's an option. Not because it's the only way to create beautiful images. I'm sure their photographs would have been beautiful had we stuck with the earlier time and our original location. But golden hour gave us the best opportunity to create the kind of timeless, breathtaking portraits they had fallen in love with. The kind that deserves to be displayed large on the walls for years to come.
Why Light Matters More Than Most People Realize
If you've never thought much about lighting before, you're not alone. Most people naturally focus on the location. They imagine a beautiful field, a mountain overlook, or a park full of flowers.
But here's the thing: photographers aren't just choosing locations. We're choosing the light.
The same field can look completely different at 2 p.m. than it does an hour before sunset. One might feel bright and harsh. The other feels soft, warm, and almost dreamlike.
That's the difference beautiful light makes.
Softer Light Creates More Beautiful Portraits
Golden hour gives us the softest, most flattering light of the day. Instead of harsh shadows under your eyes or bright patches of sunlight across your faces, everything is evenly lit with a warm, natural glow.
It also gives me much more freedom as your photographer. Rather than constantly chasing shade or asking you to stand in one very specific spot, we can move naturally through a location and focus on what matters most: your family.
For families with young children especially, that's a huge advantage. Kids don't stop playing because the light isn't perfect, and I don't expect them to. Golden hour allows me to follow their lead without sacrificing beautiful images.
It's More Comfortable, Too
Georgia summers aren't exactly known for being mild.
While golden hour can still be warm, it's almost always more comfortable than the middle of the day. The sun isn't beating down quite as intensely, everyone is happier, and it's much easier to relax, cuddle, and play without feeling like you're melting.
That comfort shows up in your photographs.
Light and Location Work Together
This is one of the biggest reasons I spend so much time helping families choose both the location and the time of day.
Some locations absolutely shine during golden hour. Others work better earlier in the day under a canopy of trees where the light stays soft longer.
The goal isn't simply finding a pretty place. It's pairing the right place with the right light.
Beautiful family portraits aren't created by location alone. They're created when beautiful light and a beautiful location come together at exactly the right time.
Why Location Still Matters
If you've looked through my portfolio, you've probably noticed I love beautiful locations. Wildflower fields, mountain overlooks, quiet parks... I'm always on the lookout for places that make a stunning backdrop for your family's story.
But here's something that might surprise you: I don't choose locations simply because they're beautiful. I choose them because I know when they're beautiful.
Early in my career, I learned that lesson the hard way. I photographed a session on a gorgeous golf course in the middle of the day because that's what my client requested. The location was incredible, but there was almost no shade. Editing that session was challenging, and I knew the final result wasn't my best work.
That experience completely changed the way I plan photo sessions.
A few years later, I had a client text me around noon on the day of their session. They had driven by our location and didn't like it.
In their words, "It looks like a jungle."
They weren't wrong. At noon, there wasn't much to look at.
But I asked them to trust me because I knew what that location would look like a few hours later. As the sun dropped behind a large tree, it would light up the tall grass with the most beautiful golden backlight. It completely transformed the scene, and I knew exactly when that transformation would happen.
By sunset, that "jungle" looked like an entirely different place.
That's why, when I recommend a location, I'm also recommending the best time to photograph it. Some places absolutely come alive during golden hour. Others are at their best in the morning. I even have locations that are best on cloudy days or work beautifully when there's a chance of rain. And when sunset simply isn't practical, I know which locations have enough shade to create beautiful images earlier in the day, too.
Choosing a location and choosing a session time are never two separate decisions. They go hand in hand.
My goal isn't just to take you somewhere pretty. It's to help you choose the place, the light, and the timing that will create the beautiful, natural images you're dreaming of.
But What If Golden Hour Just Doesn't Work?
Here's the good news: golden hour isn't the only way to create beautiful family photos.
Life with young children is busy. Sometimes bedtime simply isn't negotiable. I get it. Maybe your spouse works late, or you're visiting from out of town. Maybe your little one melts down after 6 p.m. no matter what you try.
That's okay.
My goal has never been to convince every family to schedule at sunset. My goal is to help you get the most beautiful images possible within the realities of your family's life. I can help you choose the perfect location, guide you through what to wear, and make sure your kids actually have fun. The one thing I can't do is move the sun. So when we can't change the light, we change the plan.
If golden hour isn't an option, we have plenty of alternatives.
Consider an indoor session at your home or in a studio. Or a heavily shaded location that can create soft, flattering light much earlier in the day. The final result will look a little different than the outdoor golden hour images, but they’ll still be beautiful in their own way.
And did you know that there are actually 2 golden hours each day? If you’re up for it, consider an early morning session at sunrise instead of sunset.
The point isn't to force every family into the same formula. It's to understand the strengths of each option and create a plan that works beautifully for your family.
That's why I spend so much time planning before your session ever begins. Every recommendation I make, from the location to the time of day, is based on creating the best possible experience and the best possible photographs.
Sometimes that means golden hour. Sometimes it doesn't. Either way, you'll never be left guessing. We'll make those decisions together.
So... Is Golden Hour Really Worth It?
Most of the time, I think it is.
Because family photos are something that happens once every year or two. In the grand scheme of things, one late bedtime or one quick dinner in the car is a pretty small tradeoff for photographs you'll enjoy for decades.
I think back to the family I mentioned earlier. They could have stuck with the original plan, and we still would have created beautiful images together. But they recognized that the warm, glowing look they loved throughout my portfolio came from the way I use light, and they decided that look was worth adjusting their evening for just once.
When they received their gallery, they weren't wishing they'd gotten home earlier. They were looking at photographs that captured this season of their family's life in exactly the way they'd hoped.
That's what I want for every family I photograph.
Whether we end up chasing the sunset, meeting at sunrise, finding the perfect patch of shade, or creating something beautiful indoors, my job is the same: to guide you toward the decisions that will give you photographs you'll still love decades from now.
Because beautiful family photos don't happen by accident.
They're planned with intention.

Frequently Asked Questions About Family Photo Timing
What is the best time for family photos in Atlanta?
Whether you're planning family photography in Marietta or elsewhere around the Atlanta area, I recommend scheduling outdoor family sessions during golden hour, the hour before sunset. The light is softer, more flattering, and creates the warm, timeless look you see throughout my portfolio. That said, the best time for your session also depends on your family's schedule, the season, and the location we choose.
What if golden hour is too late for my children?
That's completely okay. We have plenty of options, including shaded locations, indoor sessions, and even sunrise sessions if your family happens to be early risers. During the planning process, we'll choose the approach that best balances your family's needs with the look you want for your photographs.
Can we still get beautiful photos if we can't shoot at sunset?
Absolutely. Golden hour is my favorite, but it isn't the only way to create beautiful images. The location, weather, and your family's priorities all play a role, and I'll help you choose the best option for your situation.
Does the location affect what time we should schedule our session?
Yes! In fact, that's one of the biggest reasons I help every family choose both the location and the time of day. Some locations are spectacular at sunset, while others photograph best in the morning or under soft, overcast skies.
How far in advance should we book family photos?
I recommend reaching out several weeks in advance, especially during the busy spring and fall seasons. Booking early gives us the best chance of finding both the ideal date and the ideal lighting for your session.
